Description
Summary:The first to introduce the expression “signs of the times” into official Catholic language was Pope John XXIII, in the 1961 Apostolic Constitution, Humanae salutis. Through the signs of the times, God communicates to us his redemptive concern in a context where disorder and confusion seem to prevail. It is therefore necessary to recognize the signs of the times and interpret them through discernment. Today, peace movements, forced migration and every other burning issue, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, environmental degradation, religious fundamentalism, and the emergence of violent nationalist ideologies, can be considered “signs of the times” that invite us to provide a constructive response.
