| Summary: | The Western liturgical tradition has historically consisted of a diversity of Rites and Uses; however, the Roman Rite is by far the most frequently celebrated tradition today. This article provides a summary of the non-Roman Western liturgical tradition from the fourth century onwards. It updates the work of Archdale King and others who have studied the Western Non-Roman Rites. This article outlines the history of each major Western Non-Roman liturgical tradition and whether it is (or is not) celebrated today. Particular attention is paid to the reform of the Western Non-Roman Rites after Vatican II and the establishment of new liturgical traditions after the Council. Finally, this article touches on calls for liturgical inculturation, and argues that the historic diversity of the Western liturgical tradition can provide an impetus for, and a guide to, liturgical inculturation today. La tradition liturgique occidentale a historiquement consisté en une diversité de rites et d'usages; cependant, le rite romain est de loin la tradition la plus fréquemment célébrée aujourd'hui. Cet article fournit un résumé de la tradition liturgique occidentale non romaine à partir du quatrième siècle. Il actualise les travaux d'Archdale King et d'autres qui ont étudié les rites occidentaux non romains. Cet article présente l'histoire de chaque grande tradition liturgique occidentale non romaine et indique si elle est (ou non) célébrée aujourd'hui. Une attention particulière est accordée à la réforme des rites occidentaux non romains après Vatican II et à l'établissement de nouvelles traditions liturgiques après le Concile. Enfin, cet article aborde les appels à l'inculturation liturgique et soutient que la diversité historique de la tradition liturgique occidentale peut offrir d'impulsions et servir de guide pour l'inculturation liturgique aujourd'hui. |
