Summary: | The paper tries to clarify Moab’s rationale behind constructing its gigantic line of fortresses along its eastern border during the Iron Age I. This defensive line was too exaggerated in its style to face any real threat from non-regular or even regular aggressive armies. This unique construction is explained here as an intuitive attempt by the Moabites to demonstrate their military and economic strength openly and publicly, thus deterring any potential intruders from raiding their territory. This explanation finds support in the biblical story of Moses and his spies (Num 13:28, 31; Deut 1:28). |
