Description
Summary:In this article, a protestant theologian in the Lutheran tradition looks at the theological principles in the ecclesiology of Hans Urs von Balthasar. Balthasar employs a typology connected with various New Testament figures in order to find an understanding of the variety of the church. It is the Petrine type that finds its concrete manifestation in the ecclesiastical office. However this principle has to be complemented by the Marian principle, which finds its expression in the free activity of the lay persons. Mediating between these two principles is the Johannine principle. All this can agree with the Lutheran doctrine of the church. A comparison between von Balthasarʼs and Schellingʼs typological ecclesiology leads to the understanding, that features of these principles are spread among the divided fragment churches. A synopsis of these features will help to get a view of the unity of the church.
