Description
Summary:After C. Vogels research into its original sources, we must assume the following dichotomy regarding the understanding and performance of the sacrament of penance during the Middle Ages: the publik Lenten liturgy, one the one hand, and personal confession, private penance, the attendant satisfaction and priestly absolution, on the other. The Easter sermons of the Cistercian monk Leodegar von Altzelle (†1234) provide us with a valuable testimony into how the penitential liturgy was both handed down and lived out, surviving as such until the 13th century. Today, an awareness of sins, an attitude of penance and the ecclesiastical ministry of reconciliation can and must likewise be passed on and brought into a new relationship for the future of pastoral care.
