| Summary: | In 1997, Jacques Dupuis published a book entitled "Toward a Christian Theology of Religious Pluralism". In this book, Dupuis tries to show from a Christian point of view how the manifold religious traditions in the world can be understood as integral parts of the one saving plan of God for all humankind, without compromising Christ's universal and unique role. However, shortly after its public release, the book was examined by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), which in a subsequent Notification mentions in general, "notable ambiguities and difficulties" in Dupuis' "interpretation of the sole and universal salvific mediation of Christ, the unicity and completeness of Christ's revelation, the universal salvific action of the Holy Spirit, the orientation of all people to the Church, and the value and significance of the salvific function of other religions". A thorough analysis of these issues carried out in this paper shows that the ambiguities and difficulties, recognized by the CDF, are mainly due to the author's imprecise use of language and not of doctrinal error. |
