L'examen de la posture herméneutique de cet islamologue, qui fait de la figure d'al-Hallâj (m. 309AH/922EC) le paradigme de la sainteté en islam, révèle que sa vision de la réalité étudiée est nettement tributaire de sa propre spiritualité. How to approach Muslim mysticism? Born from an epistemological inquiry about the ways in which the concepts used in research to shape reality and the location of subjectivity in the academic study of religion, this article investigates the work of Louis Massignon (d. 1962). An examination of the hermeneutic posture of this scholar of Islam, who elects the figure of al-Hallâj (d. 309AH/922CE) as the paradigm of Islamic holiness, reveals that his scholarship is clearly dependent on his own spirituality. His inquiry, driven by existential questions, illustrates the difficult reconciliation between the (scientific) quest for the true and the (metaphysical) quest for the Truth. Taking Massignon as a case study shows how the subjectivity of the researcher supports research and simultaneously hinders it. In order to approach a fairer understanding of reality, this article offers certain methodological precautions, so that subjectivity does not distort reality but instead illuminates and reveals it. |
