Summary: | Pope Francis’ meetings with Muslims in Iraq are new steps on the path of dialogue – based on “esteem” – which was promoted by Vatican II. The Pontiff’s steps, which have been in preparation for years, with words and deeds on an affective, spiritual, sociological and theological level, are an appeal for understanding of the other’s pain (Jerusalem) and the exceptional event of common prayer to overcome tribalism (Sarajevo,) the clarification of the role of religion, free from instrumentalization (Baku) and not reduced to the private sphere (Cairo,) and lately the testimony of the human call to universal brotherhood. Francis also showed how the recognition of God’s otherness refers the human person to the fraternal recognition of his fellow human beings. He expressed this recognition in his meeting with Ayatollah as-Sistānī, a Shiite leader who is appreciated for his non-violent stance. |
