Description
Summary:The year 1821 represents a foundational date in Italian literature, for two hundred years ago Alessandro Manzoni began the writing of I promessi sposi (The Betrothed.) The author of a masterpiece, Manzoni is a multifaceted figure as he was also the father of a family of nine children. His family environment constitutes the background reality from which I promessi sposi inevitably arises. This is where Manzoni’s Christianity was born, as was his trust in Providence, and the poetry of grace. In addition, it gave birth, unpredictably, to a movement that would lead to a new and united Italy. After the uprisings of 1848, a group of university students acclaimed Manzoni because he had given impetus to the unification of Italy.
