Summary: | In the first days of July, the Joint Sessions of the Italian Court of Appeals [Corte di Cassazione] will pronounce on issues concerning the display of the crucifix in school classrooms. The article recalls the previous stages of the debate on the crucifix issue. It then outlines the position of the well-known Jewish jurist Joseph Weiler on the tension between “positive” and “negative” religious freedom, and the “reasonable accommodation” approach proposed by Marta Cartabia [the Minister of Justice in the government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi since 2021.] Finally, recalling some indications of recent Popes, the positive significance of displaying the crucifix in the context of constructive dialogue between reason and faith, and of common collaboration in responding to today’s great educational challenges, is sustained. |
