Σύνοψη:This year marks two important national anniversaries; the first, the 160th anniversary of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861; the second, the 75th anniversary of the institutional referendum that gave victory to the republic in 1946, ending the monarchy and the reign of the House of Savoy over Italy. These events represented two significant moments in our national history and helped shape Italy’s political and institutional identity. This article deals with the referendum, which saw the political parties – the conservative ones for the monarchy; the popular and progressive ones, who had participated in the Resistance against Nazi-Fascism, for the republic – and civil society as a whole, which participated in such significant numbers in the referendum and in the political competition for the Constituent Assembly.
