| Summary: | This article calls upon the church to reconsider its current practices and traditions with the goal of moving in new directions that meaningfully include persons with disabilities. Alternatives to traditional programs have been described in this special issue. The failure of the church to step forward as advocates and leaders in creating supportive communities that welcome people with and without disabilities on some level places it in peril. However, as illustrated here, there are those doing innovative work in an effort to bring change. If the church is to be truly responsive to its calling, its culture and practices must be changed. |
