Summary: | The paper proposes some introductive observations for a comparative study of Jewish and Egyptian temple literature. An affinity between these traditions was already noted by Jewish-Hellenistic authors like Artapanus and Philo of Alexandria who spoke of a Moses instructed in Egyptian philosophy (that was, priestly lore and ideology). The book of Leviticus, in particular, offers many thematic and structural parallels to the Egyptian ritual literature. As a general, authoritative "manual of the Jerusalem Temple", the book of Leviticus can be compared with the Temple Manual, the collection of general rules and instructions on Egyptian temple liturgy to be published by Joaquim Quack.
