| Summary: | The Pontifical Biblical Commission's document The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church (IBC) details interpretive methods which the Roman Catholic exegete should use in the study of Biblical texts. Unlike the other interpretive procedures and methods highlighted in this document, the use of the fundamentalist interpretation is strongly discouraged in all circumstances. This article highlights the IBC's description and reasons for the discouragement of the fundamentalist interpretations, then further surveys this theological movement, and finally assesses the accuracy of the IBC's descriptions of the fundamentalist approach. It outlines the cautions that should be maintained when dealing with some forms of fundamentalist interpretation as well as its aspects that are shared with the greater Christian tradition. Le document de la Commission pontificale biblique L'interprétation de la Bible dans l'Église (IBÉ) présente les diverses méthodes d'interprétation que l'exégète catholique romaine devrait utiliser dans l'étude des textes bibliques. Contrairement aux autres méthodes d'interprétation dont il est question dans ce document, l'utilisation de l'interprétation fondamentaliste est absolument déconseillée en toutes circonstances. Cet article s'intéresse à la description que l'IBÉ fait du fondamentalisme ainsi que les raisons qui en justifient le caractère dangereux. Il examine ensuite, plus en détail, ce mouvement théologique et évalue la valeur des limites que l'IBÉ relève en regard du fondamentalisme. Il décrit, enfin, les mises en garde qui devraient être maintenues lorsqu'il s'agit de certaines formes d'interprétation fondamentaliste ainsi que ses aspects qui sont partagés avec la plus grande tradition chrétienne. |
