Description
Summary:The 1983 Code in canons 836 and 840 reflects the substantial relationship between faith and both liturgical worship and sacraments. The Second Vatican Council had previously formulated in ist main documents, partcularly in Sacramentum Concilium, the sacraments and the sacramentality of the Church from a reneved vision of Christian worship. Ist reciprocal faith-sacrament relationship has been always affirmed by the most genuine catholic sacramental tradition. Nevertheless, it was given little consideration by the Code of 1917 and by the Post-Tridentine Theology that supported it. Hence after the Second Vatican Council, the inicial attempt to reform the Sacramental Canon Law by the reviewers of the 1917 Code was soon revealed inadequate. This fact forced the Potificial Commission for the Renewal of the Code to take mucho more into consideration the contributions made in this area by the Council and by the renewed contemporary sacramental theology, which contributions were gathered through different advisory bodies. This article reports this long and fruitful renewal process of the Sacramental Canonical Law, especially those aspects related to the faith-sacrament connection, considering the editorial iter of canons 836 and 840 and ist exegetical interpretation. Both canons, of doctinal and normative character, very rightly highlight the consideration of every sacramental and liturgical action as sign and faith expression and, in turn, as ist own nourishment and strength. These canons represent a great innovation and far overcome the sacrament definition given by the 1917 Code. The 1983 Code conceives the sacraments as sacramenta fidei, and faith is considered as a constitutive part of the sacrament. Every celebration of the sacrament without faith remeins intrinsically denaturalized, and it could result not only fruitless but also illicit and invalid for the performer
