| Summary: | On February 26 of 1514, Pope Leo X. (1513 to 1521) signed a letter send to the abbot and monastery of Santa Maria of Burgohondo, in Avila. With it, the pontiff responded to the request, "for the increase of divine reverence and the spiritual and temporal good of the church", makes by the abbot Juan Dávila y Arias (1506-1557). Among other provisions, he gives licence to amend the laws that had been observed throughout the Middle Ages, at least from given time. The result of that reform is a law in the line with the changing needs of the monastery and the region of Alto Aberche, particularly in regard to the waiver of the refectory and common dormitory concerns, but in practice it breaks is regular clerical existence transforming the concept of residence and remove the solemn observance of the vow of poverty that, until then, did the clergy of Santa maria. While waiting for another job in delivering the statutory provisions of the monastery, which was approved in 1549, this article takes the process of reforming the laws and the disintegration of the old council of regularly clerics from 1514 |
