Description
Summary:This paper focus Portuguese expansion chronicles that were printed during the 16th century, in order to understand how a certain religiousness was then described in these discourses. We analyze some of the sea voyage topoi and their narrative representations in a specific writing strategy of historiographical discourse, usually known as Expansion Chronicles. These narratives express the purpose of Portuguese political power within the context of the 16th century European nations, hopefully legitimizing Portuguese presence in non-European spaces. Therefore, we ponder on the contexts in which religiousness emerges and eventually is described. The importance of the Cape Route for Portuguese presence in non-European spaces also demands a specific concern on the way those narratives depicts this space.
