Summary: | In this article we aim to analyse Amaro’s sea voyage in search of Paradise which is narrated in the Portuguese medieval text Conto de Amaro, presumably produced in the 14th Century, focusing specifically on vision and desire as the main motivation of his Quest. We will examine particular elements of the construction, and also the deconstruction, of maritime space, and we will be mainly interested in how space in religious literature based on the navigatio topic tends to be presented horizontally as opposed to the vertical notion of the space of Salvation in the imaginary world of the Celestial Ladder. |
