Summary: | Chris Maunder, as editor, is a good choice for this collection of essays about Mary, the mother of Jesus. He has already worked for Oxford University Press previously and has recently published with them his survey of twentieth-century Marian apparitions in Europe. This volume joins many others in this Oxford series; there are 42 essays here on aspects of Marian studies written by 38 contributors (four write two chapters apiece). The editor is all too aware that, even in a volume of this length, he and his writers have merely scratched the surface; the book, however, deals with many aspects of the worldwide phenomenon of academic study about Mary and of personal devotions to her. |
