Description
Summary:As he lays out in his introductory chapter (pp. 1-13), Robert Foster’s theological study of the book of Psalms is indeed theology: a study of God and what the Psalms communicate about God. In this task he seeks to provide an important counterpoint to studies that primarily focus on other important aspects of the Psalms such as rhetoric, anthropology, and even—in Christian contexts—Christology. Foster argues that one can construe the theology that runs throughout and between the various psalms in the Psalter as ‘an argument about who God is and about why God acts or fails to act in the world’ (p. 5). In order to tease out this theology, Foster examines what individual psalms say about God, how the theology of individual psalms relates to that in the surrounding psalms, and the overarching theology (or rather, theologies) communicated in the Psalter.
