| Summary: | This article offers a new look at what Hitler actually thought of Jesus, the central figure in Christianity. It argues that Hitler not only considered Jesus to be an example for every National Socialist, but that he also considered him divine. Previous scholarship has shown that Hitler was a firm believer in God and that he did have a positive view of Jesus even though he expressed only contempt for the Christianity of the established churches. However, the issue of whether Hitler considered Jesus divine has not been satisfactorily answered thus far. Although some scholars claim to have found proof that Hitler did think of Jesus as divine, others have just as emphatically denied that this claim is true. In this article, I will go over the evidence once more and show that, although the critics have been right in questioning the previous claims that Hitler thought that Jesus was God, I will present new evidence that really does show that Hitler did speak of Jesus as divine. This also raises some questions about Hitler's belief in God and what religion he actually considered himself to have adhered to and also presents historians with some important issues to consider when writing the history of Nazi Germany. |
