Summary: | In January 1848 Fr John Joseph Therry buried seventy-three-year-old Farrell Cuffe in the (old) Catholic cemetery at Windsor. Both men had had their fair share of disputes with English authorities in earlier decades. It is unclear the extent to which Therry may have known about Cuffe's fascinating life as both a political rebel and a pioneer colonial teacher. Cuffe is best known for his exploits in the 1798 United Irishman movement, for which he was transported to Australia, and as a participant-some historians say a "ringleade"'-in the 1804 Castle Hill uprising. Cuffe has been rarely acknowledged as a Catholic penal educator. A trained teacher from Kings County (or Co Offaly), Cuffe successfully operated schools at "Upper Pitt's Row" in Sydney for thirteen years before Therry's arrival, and later at Richmond, New South Wales. Cuffe's story, and those of other pioneer Irish Catholic-trained teachers, such as William Maume, James and John Kenny, and Catherine Milling, are examined in this revisionist account of the foundations of Catholic education in Australia. This article may also have implications for broader colonial history, given Catholic education has received minimal coverage therein. |
