| Résumé: | The family Aspietes from the (Armeno-Iberian) Pakourianos-Clan has as ancestor the Aspietes (here it is a first name!), who was one of the most important generals of emperor Alexios I Komnenos. Anna Komnene speaks highly of his military virtues and capacity during the war against Robert Guiscard (1081), but disparages him as commander in Cilicia and Western Syria shortly after the First Crusade. There is little doubt that this Aspietes is identical with the Aspietes Pakourianos attested on seals as κουροπαλάτης and πρωτονωβελλίσιμος. One of his sons married in the 12th century an unknown daughter of Andronikos Komnenos σεβαστοκράτωρ as we learn from the metrical legend of a seal. They became the parents of three or four sons who used the first name of the ancestor Aspietes as family name to specify their branchwithin the Clan of the Pakourianoi. |
