Summary: | There are numerous intimations of synodality and collegiality in the New Testament. In this essay, I first examine texts that show synodal ways of thinking and acting in the early Christian communities through their collective prayer, common meals, sharing of resources, and corporate engagement in the evangelizing mission. I then look for glimmers of collegiality in two episodes recounted in the Acts of the Apostles where threats to the harmony of the church were resolved by the leaders. Finally, I reflect on how new scientific understandings could shed light on dynamics of synodality in the church. |
