On the one hand, a maximalist interpretation, prevalent in the magisterium and the manualist tradition, strengthened the role of the primacy from the perspective of the Church as a corporate society, with a juridical and centralizing cast. On the other hand, a minority theological current of renewal, inspired by Tradition and the teaching of the Fathers, interpreted the Petrine dogma within a Church inclined to consider the pneumatological and prophetic aspect. During Vatican II, the work of some Roman theologians favoured an intermediate position between the two currents which, along the lines of Vatican I, managed to reassess the core of the primacy in its relationship to the episcopate. | ||

Da una parte, l'interpretazione massimalista, predominante nel magistero e nella manualistica, rafforzò il primato dalla prospettiva di una Chiesa societaria, di stampo giuridico e centralizzatore; dall'altra, una corrente teologica rinnovatrice e minoritaria, ispirata alla dottrina dei Padri e alla Tradizione, ha interpretato il dogma petrino all'interno di una Chiesa tendente a considerare l'aspetto pneumatologico e profetico. Durante il Vaticano II, l'azione di alcuni teologi romani, favorì una posizione intermedia fra le due correnti che, sulla traccia del Vaticano I, riuscì a ridimensionare il nucleo del primato nel suo rapporto con l'episcopato. | ||
