Summary: | As we enter the twenty-first century, there is little doubt that religion plays an important role in both international and emerging national politics. This was not entirely anticipated in the late twentieth century when secularization seemed the dominant theme of an emerging global modernity. But if vastly increased attention has been given to international and transnational religious movements in the fields of international relations and political science, less has been understood about the historical relationship between the emergence of an international order and the politicization of religion that are critical precursors to the role of religion in the midst of globalization. In addition, the interests of Christian mission studies or the analytical framework of post-colonial studies too often limits what has been researched.
