| Summary: | Through a research project in 2019, I interviewed relatives and clergy about their thoughts and expectations related to facilitation and individualisation of funerals in The Church of Norway. I examined what families mean and expect when they request a funeral "in the spirit of the dead", and to what extent priests accommodate such expectations. In this article I ask what role the priests have in making the church funeral a meaningful rite in a late modern time, and how the life of the deceased can be made visible through the funeral, while the church's message of hope in Jesus Christ still is expressed. |
