Variae sunt artes diaboli: A Curious Misunderstanding

According to a motto used by Ronald Hendel, “Variants are arts of the devil.” However these words, traced back to Laurentius Fabricius in 1625, turn out to rest on a misunderstanding of Fabricius’ words.
