Description
Summary:The United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force on 22 January 2021, is the result of 75 years of effort. The new treaty commits its State Parties not to develop, manufacture, transfer, possess, use, or threaten to use nuclear weapons. While the weapon states oppose this treaty, its proponents rely on its educational effects to persuade resisting states to join it, and on the stigma of possessing banned weapons of mass destruction so as to shame them into signing the treaty. The Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, scheduled for August in New York, could prove to be the showdown between the two sides.
