Summary: | On December 30, 2020, the European Union and China reached a political understanding on the bilateral investment agreement. The aim of the agreement is to continue to deepen economic relations and provide each side with more secure access to investment in the other’s economy. Brussels insists that China has never come this far in opening its markets. China has also agreed to ambitious provisions on sustainable development, made commitments on forced labor and the ratification of core conventions of the International Labor Organization. The new EU-China investment agreement will benefit not only Europe and China, but also the post-pandemic globalized world, including the United States. |
