Summary: | Cyprus shows itself, in Antiquity, as an island particularly receptive to issues related to birth and kourotrophia, as well as a land of mixed gender and species: just think of the famous example of Aphrodite Amatusia, goddess who contains in herself both female and male elements. The discovery in 1929 of the sanctuary of Ayia Irini (1200 B.C.- 150 A.D.) by the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, led by Einar Gjerstad, brought to light some small teriomorphic hybrids (centaurs, minotaurs?), also marked by gender contamination. The aim of this work is to enhance the findings by Ayia Irini within the rich Cypriot dossier and to suggest a ritual use related to fertility, pregnancy and childbirth. |
