| Item Description: | Pre-modern mathematical and judicial texts exhibit distinctive formal features which can be identified as early as in the texts from Mesopotamia and Egypt and which enable conclusions to be drawn about the structure of their content. Using examples from Hittite, Greek, and Roman legal texts and mathematical and legal texts from Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, the individual contributions analyze how normativity (linguistic features, formulas, specific design of writing material) was used to promote putative permanent validity and authority. They also prompt us to reflect about the terms “coherence” and “abstraction” and enable us to gain insights into the validity and acceptance of norms in pre-modern cultures and the procedures through which they were enforced. ______________Vormoderne mathematische und juristische Texte weisen ausgeprägte formale Merkmale auf, die bereits in den Texten aus Mesopotamien und Ägypten erkennbar sind und Rückschlüsse auf ihre inhaltliche Struktur zulassen. Anhand von Beispielen aus hethitischen, griechischen und römischen Rechtstexten sowie mathematischen und juristischen Texten aus Mesopotamien und dem alten Ägypten wird in den einzelnen Beiträgen untersucht, wie die Normativität der Texte (sprachliche Merkmale, Formeln, spezifische Gestaltung des Schreibmaterials) zur Förderung einer vermeintlich dauerhaften Gültigkeit und Autorität eingesetzt wurde. Die Beiträge regen dabei auch zum Nachdenken über die Begriffe „Kohärenz“ und „Abstraktion“ an und ermöglichen es, Erkenntnisse über die Gültigkeit und Akzeptanz von Normen in vormodernen Kulturen und die Verfahren, mit denen sie durchgesetzt wurden, zu gewinnen The present volume is the result of the project "The Normativity of Formal Orders ...", carried out in two workshops held within the framework of the former cluster of excellence "Normative Orders" at the Goethe-University during 2015 and 2016 |
