Summary: | The integral transcription has just been published of the Diary written by the Jesuit Fr. Giuseppe Gianfranceschi while he was following the famous and dramatic expedition of the airship “Italia” to the North Pole, led by Umberto Nobile in 1928. Although he never personally climbed into the airship’s gondola, Gianfranceschi, as chaplain of the expedition, followed the entire preparation of the enterprise and its development by staying on the support ship at the advanced base of King’s Bay, in the Svalbard Islands. The Diary is an exciting account of the events of the flight and the dramatic wait after the tragic fall of the aircraft. Among the most interesting pages are those on the assignment, given by Pope Pius XI, to leave a cross at the Pole and the dialogue between the priest and the survivors of the terrible experience. |
