Description
Summary:This paper discusses, with illustrations from throughout Newman’s life, the very great importance that friendship held for him, both personally and spiritually. It suggests that Newman’s appreciation of the qualities associated with friendship offer an invaluable model for human relationships today. Newman reminds us that, in times of upheaval, dislocation and disruption, the constancy and presence of personal friends is vital to human and spiritual flourishing. For Newman, it is also clear that the Christian commandment to ‘love one another’ is only really followed by loving those closest to us first. His motto as cardinal - ‘Cor ad Cor Loquitor’ (heart speaks to heart) - reflects Newman’s deep imaginative capacity and belief that the search for truth is only fostered heart by heart, soul by soul, and friend by friend.
