Summary: | In India, the Church is appreciated for its action in the fields of education, health care and social work; however, public opinion reacts differently when Church leaders, especially priests and religious, engage in activities promoting human dignity and human rights. This is the case of Stan Swamy, an 83-year-old Jesuit, who for decades has dedicated himself to defending the rights of the Adivasis, who are «the most oppressed among the Indians», and for this reason he has recently been arrested. Stan’s example can fire the imagination of the Catholic Church and allow it to discover its prophetic vocation. |
