Summary: | A recent document by the International Theological Commission recontextualizes the Second Vatican Council’s doctrine on religious freedom. Its authors observe certain new aspects with regard to 1965; for example, the perception of religious plurality; the State’s claim to be «neutral»; and, of religions as something «dangerous». The document reaffirms the Council’s focus on individual conscience. In addition, that not only should spiritual authorities accept religious freedom, but political powers should guarantee it because of the irreplaceably creative and constructive role that religions play in society, by committing themselves to the common good. |
