Summary: | In her novel, La linea del colore, Igiaba Scego tackles the struggles for female emancipation, confrontation with a racist culture, and the impossibility of escaping from one’s social status, through the story of the artist Lafanu Brown. Set in the mid-nineteenth century, the vicissitudes of the artist, of Chippewa and Afro-American origin, are brought to light by Leila, an art curator who is preparing a project for the Venice Biennale. During this artistic and cultural research, Leila’s life crosses inextricably with that of Lafanu Brown, consequently revealing how the problems arising from the colonial era have not yet been definitively resolved. |
