Summary: | Protestant Ethics in the German speaking world faces a number of challenges, which include inter- and transdisciplinary response to public demand for reflection and orientation regarding concrete moral questions in society – including the church. This entails awareness for socio-historical, cultural and religious particularity and contextuality in an international setting as well as theological explication in a plural environment. Those challenges are met in three ways: Firstly, a new awareness of the discipline’s responsibility in research and teaching shows in a number of new comprehensive publications and the establishment of a new forum for protestant theological ethical discourse. Secondly, the trend towards interdisciplinary applied ethics in which fundamental ethical and dogmatic problems appear as implications of material ethics – rather than the other way round – has solidified. Thirdly, the international discourse paradigm of public theology reflecting on and contributing to the religious dimension of public discourse and the public dimension of religious discourse while allowing for a wide range of theological positions is drawing growing attention in the field of Protestant Ethics. |
