Description
Summary:The charity model of disability has been soundly rejected by individuals with disabilities in favour of one that emphasizes rights and empowerment. Although good to be rejected, models based on rights and empowerment also have limits, as evidenced by the ongoing transgression of the rights of persons with disabilities. I will suggest that the rejected model of charity is actually a perversion of it, and then argue for rethinking charity, based on human dignity, within the framework provided by Catholic Social Teaching. Such a model can actually address what rights and empowerment does not.
