Summary:This article has as its theme the perceptions about education of the Catholic newspaper O Apostolo in the 19th century. The goal is to understand the participation of this journal in the public sphere with regard to debates on education. Therefore, I try to situate it as to its ideological affiliation, to perceive the nuances of its editorial profile and its performance in the educational field. This exercise showed that the Catholic journal in question adopted a prescriptive perspective at the expense of the specialized pedagogical debate. O Apostolo essentially defended religious education using its authority in order to orientate families in the care of children's education. According to the newspaper, the reward would be the development of morally strong Brazilians and, consequently, a society free from evil.
O presente artigo tem como tema as percepções sobre educação do periódico católico O Apostolo no século XIX. O objetivo é compreender a participação desse jornal na esfera pública no que diz respeito aos debates sobre educação. Para isso, procuro situá-lo quanto à sua filiação ideológica, perceber as nuances de seu perfil editorial e sua atuação no campo educacional. Esse exercício mostrou que o periódico católico em pauta adotou uma perspectiva prescritiva em detrimento do debate pedagógico especializado. O Apostolo defendia, essencialmente, a educação religiosa usando sua força para orientar as famílias nos cuidados com a educação de seus filhos. Segundo o periódico, a recompensa seria a formação de brasileiros moralmente fortes e, por consequência, uma sociedade livre do mal.
