| Summary: | The article examines the development of motifs related to the character of the biblical king Solomon in literary sources of the early modern period. Taking a closer look at some elements of the depiction of Solomon shows their diachronic elaboration leading up to a "complex character" in the modern sense prevalent since the Enlightenment. Exemplary representations of the wise ruler in a 15th century Carnival play by an anonymous author and in a play by Hans Sachs are analysed with regard to their historic context and are contrasted briefly to Klopstock’s drama Salomo (1764). This analysis will focus explicitly on establishing that complex methods of characterisation were used in all epochs but they were accentuated and employed in different ways. |
