Description
Summary:While novels about the Queen of Sheba were comparatively rare in the first half of the 20th century, the topic experienced a veritable boom after 1960, which remains unabated until today. An explanation may be found in King Vidor’s movie "Solomon and Sheba" of 1959, which combines features of two novels published in the same decade. Those three works of art not only share a singular plot, which is a daring rearrangement of elements from the Biblical narrative in 1Kings 1-11. There is also a large number of other striking similarities between them, many of which have been taken up by later novelists. Therefore, "Solomon and Sheba" provides a most interesting case study for how imaginative additions and embellishments are passed on over generations of writers in the never-ceasing process of telling and re-telling Biblical stories to a broader audience outside the actual religious teaching in churches and synagogues.
