Description
Summary:Depictions of Solomon in public buildings can express very different ideas. Often it is the context, which clarifies what Solomon is supposed to express. In medieval churches, Solomon can appear like Christ as judge, thereby referring to the Last Judgement. In connection with the Queen of Sheba, Solomon is parallelised with Christ, however, only implicitly, while the emphasis is on the Queen who - allegorically - stands for the Three Holy Kings. In the context of a monarchy, kings - for example German emperors - depict Solomon as personification of wisdom, justice, wealth and glory to establish themselves as a new Solomon. In a republican system, however, depictions of Solomon do not express that a ruler is like Solomon, but admonish judges and incite rulers to act like he did. They are not intended to serve propaganda purposes but have a critical potential. In the context of universities and libraries, Solomon is depicted as the personification of wisdom. Together with depictions of the virtues, Solomon appears as a paradigm of wisdom, thereby serving a parenetic function.
