| Summary: | Mentre l’incontro di Francesco d’Assisi con il sultano è considerato attuale in quanto descritto – anacronisticamente – quale dialogo interreligioso, altrettanto non accade per la vicenda dei Protomartiri francescani, ossia cinque frati Minori uccisi in Maroc-co nel 1220. Questi risultano inadeguati per l’oggi sociale ed ecclesiale e come accade per altri santi suscitano imbarazzo e perplessità. Grazie ad una lettura della loro vi-cenda e della memoria successiva nel contesto storico e teologico del tempo è possi-bile con onestà intellettuale accogliere della storia della Chiesa e del francescanesimo questa pagina che – come altre – si vorrebbe rimuovere perché ritenuta inattuale. While the meeting of Francis of Assisi with the sultan is considered currently - anach-ronistically - as an interreligious dialogue, the same does not happen for the story of the Franciscan Protomartyrs, that is, five Friars killed in Morocco in 1220. These are inadequate for the “political correctness” in the society and in the Church today. As happens with other saints, they cause embarrassment and perplexity. Thanks to a reading of their story and subsequent memory in the historical and theological con-text of the time, it is possible with intellectual honesty to welcome this page of the history of the Church and Franciscanism. |
