| Summary: | On 1st Advent 2018 the new order of worship texts and hymns for the Evangelical Church in Germany was officially introduced in the Wittenberg Castle Church. It replaces the previous order of reading and sermon texts from 1978 and is the result of an extensive consultation process of experts and interested lay people lasting almost ten years. The article sheds light on the process of a – according to its own understanding – moderate revision. Changes have been made primarily by enriching the six reading and sermon series with Old Testament texts, so that now almost one third of the texts are from the Old Testament; previously it was only just over one sixth. The mixture of biblical texts in the series takes up a frequently expressed criticism of the old order, which referred to a certain monotony when in a church year only the epistle text (series II) or only the gospel (series I) was to be preached. Most changes were made to the plan of the weekly hymns, which now usually contains a hymn from the end of the 20th or the beginning of the 21st century. |
