Description
Summary:Artiklen tegner med udgangspunkt i The Cambridge History of Christianity 1.
Based on The Cambridge History of Christianity 1. Origins to Constantine, the review-essay gives a thorough presentation of the change in paradigm that during the past 25 years has taken place in the study of early Christianity. Complementary with several contributions of the book, the essay points to six different areas that have exerted pervasive influence on the manner early Christianity is perceived by current scholarship. The topics pertain to: the so-called partings of the ways, i.e., the relationships between early Judaism and Christianity; the problematization of cultural essentialism in the time-honoured reconstructions of early Christianity; the emphasis on diversity of early Christianity and the corollary attempt to dissolve categories like ‘orthodoxy’ and ‘heresy’; the attempts to dissolve the time-honoured concept of Gnosticism; an increased appraisal in scholarship of regional differences within early Christianity; the increased effort of scholarship to focus on matters pertaining to intellectual history as central for an appraisal of early Christianity (topics mentioned are the wide array of works being published on, for instance, the Greco-Roman educational system; the slave institution; the family institution; the friendship institution). Even though important areas like magic; gender-construction; the understanding of the relationship between the sexes; the contribution of Greco-Roman philosophy and medical literature as valuable frames of reference for an appraisal of early Christianity; the acknowledgement of judaizing forms of Christianity for the question of the relationships between early Judaism and Christianity; the development and transformation of different literary genres of the second and third centuries etc. are not covered by the book (although in some essays these topics are hinted at), the book is emphasised as the very best on the market if one wants to get thorough information on early Christianity and an extensive presentation of the state of art of current scholarship on early Christianity. The book is a masterpiece of wisdom and learning.
