Description
Summary:Shortly after the entry into force of the 1917 Code, on 2-3 June 1918 an authentic interpretation took place regarding the admission to marriage of those who are ignorant of Christian doctrine. It was established that the parish priest should try to give such instruction, but if the betrothed refused it, they could not for this reason be dismissed as regards admission to marriage, as if they were included in the can. 1066 concerning public sinners. With this interpretation, several centuries of debate were concluded, although during that time, the validity of such marriages was never questioned. In the response to the consultation from Malta, the proposal by B. Melata was accepted. Already the codification indicated that it was a question concerning preparation for marriage. The apostolic exhortation Familiaris consortio and the Code of 1983 have confirmed this direction, by which the pastoral guidance in these situations consists in evangelization and catechesis.
