Summary: | The article takes up the popular critique of a ‘democracy deficit’ in churches, and discusses current problems with this critique as well as its plausibility –theologically and sociologically. In this context a distinction between three “forms of knowledge” is applied, and an advanced theory of church (by H.-R. Reuter) is presented. Based on many years of participant observations of the ‘style’ of an exemplary ‘organized church’, the thesis is developed: The form of governance in a church is that of an ‘elected aristocracy’ which could be further ‘democratized’ – but at what price? |
