Summary: | Although Digital Humanities (DH) has been around for decades now - albeit under the name Humanities Computing for most of those years -, they are still considered a young discipline undergoing a process of formation. Consequently, their status and character are under fierce debate: Are they a discipline, a field of research, or just a set of methods and tools? And what are they about? DH research is triggered by questions from the established disciplines. But it aims at generic solutions and attempts to reflect the transition that humanistic research is subject to under the conditions of the digital. DH is gaining a lot of attention (and funding) these days, leading to a rapidly accelerated development. But what effect does that have on traditional fields of research such as the field of Biblical studies? Are they to be left behind, decoupled and alienated from an increasingly autocentric community of DH? How can we integrate both sides of D and H, reinforce the dialogue and ensure that innovation from DH is fruitful for the evolution of a range of fields from the humanities? |
