Personalidade excepcional e multiforme, aliava ao realismo das actuações concretas o génio do sonhador utópico, imaginando um Quinto Império religioso que Pessoa viria a transformar em Quinto Império da Língua Portuguesa. It was what Fernando Pessoa called Vieira, for the eloquence and quality of the use of the Portuguese language. Above all, in the Sermons of Baroque origin, in which, contrarily to the fashion of the epoch, he was always faithful to two fundamental dynamics: the classic rhetoric and the biblical and liturgical thematic that was usually the title of all his parenetic activity. In addition, an Ambassador in the main European courts, this Jesuit missionary was the great apostle of Brazil against slavery: in Bahia, preaching the softening of the Negros captivity because he could not affront it directly; in Maranhão, hindering the enslavement of the Indians. Exceptional and manifold personality, he brought together the realism of real activities and the genius of the utopian dreamer, imagining a religious Fifth Empire that Pessoa would transform in the Fifth Empire of the Portuguese language. |
